Upon this rock I will build my church. - Mt 16:18
Just in time to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Religious Education children have come together to create a project expressing their thankfulness to God. Composed of many pieces and parts is the mosaic or puzzle image of our church standing upon a large rock. While every individual piece expresses the gratitude and blessing of each child, the completed puzzle reminds us that the Lord has blessed all of us with many things, and from these blessings we together build up the church as the People of God.
Rock of Thanksgiving:
The large rock that so nobly upholds our church is formed from hundreds of smaller rocks. Starting with a blank piece of paper, the children designed their small rocks as contributions to the larger rock. On these rocks, they thanked God for those blessings which have been gifted to us and have helped us in building up the church. Reading through even just a few of them, you will clearly see the beautiful thoughts, words, and pictures of gratitude for blessings which include physical things, gifts and talents, people, and so forth. All of these rocks grouped together represent God’s action in our lives and form one large “rock of thanksgiving” upon which our church is founded.
People of God:
Each child was also given a person puzzle piece to name his or her own. The significance here is that we, the People of God, are the church, not the building itself. It takes all of us, and our special blessings and talents gifted to us by God, to make up the church.
