Most of us remember where we were when we first heard the news of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Now, as we approach the 10th anniversary of that tragic day, we are reminded of the victims and their families, as well as the countless men and women who fearlessly jumped into the fray to aid in the rescue and recovery.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) at usccb.org offers a collection of reflections and resources which include videos and essays of individual experiences in connection with 9/11 - one poignant essay, by Shareda Hosein, describes her dichotomous life as a Muslim lieutenant colonel in the United States Army. Liturgical considerations and resources are also provided on the website, as is the USCCB Statement on the Anniversary of September 11th.
In conjunction with this year’s anniversary, a United States Senate resolution suggests that we observe a Moment of Remembrance at 1p.m. ET on September 11. At that moment, Saint Alphonsus Liguori Parish will join the rest of our nation in a ringing of bells and sounding of sirens to commemorate those who lost their lives and were affected by the painful events of 10 years ago. We encourage you to take a few moments to visit the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and light a candle or just offer up a prayer for the 9/11 victims and their families.
Special event: Join us at St. Alphonsus on Sept. 8
Zionsville begins A Tribute to 9/11: Ten Year Remembrance on Thursday, September 8, with a World Trade Center (WTC) beam procession from State Road 334 and I-65 to the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Zionsville High School. The procession, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and arrive at the PAC by 7 p.m., will include local fire, police, sheriff and military personnel, American Legion Riders and Patriot Guard. The Knights of Columbus will salute the procession as it passes the church. Parishioners are invited to gather near the parish flags at 6 p.m. for the installation of our new Service Flag, to pray the Rosary and experience the procession as a community, after which everyone is encouraged to head to the PAC for a special presentation*.
U.S. Service Flag
Veterans, current members of the armed forces and families of those serving are invited to also be in attendance for the flag ceremony, as we pay tribute to fellow parishioners who are currently deployed members of the United States military. The Service Flag is an official banner authorized by the Department of Defense, honoring members of families or organizations serving in the Armed Forces. The practice of displaying the Service Flag became widespread during World War II, and we are privileged to continue that tradition at Saint Alphonsus Liguori. The parish may only fly the flag as long as we have deployed service men and women among our registered members. If you know of a registered parishioner who is currently deployed, please contact the parish office to confirm that the church is aware.
As we show our respect for our nation by observing the activities and memorials dedicated to the 9/11 victims and their families, let us continue to pray for those who put their lives on the line daily to protect us and defend our liberty.
*Note: PAC program tickets may be purchased ahead of time at Akard True Value, Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, State Bank of Lizton, The Zionsville Times Sentinel and The Lebanon Reporter.
Oh, most gracious and loving God,
Welcome into your arms the victims of violence and terrorism.
Comfort their families and all who grieve for them, and help us in our fear and uncertainty.
Bless us with the knowledge that we are secure in your love.
Strengthen all those who work for peace, and may the peace the world cannot give reign in our hearts.
We ask this through Christ, Our Lord,
Amen.
