Advent is the beginning of the Church’s liturgical year, a month later is the beginning of the calendar year. Resolutions and private promises are made at this time with sincerity and determination. “Peace on Earth” is not just a slogan to Believers, but a reality a Believer brings about by words and conduct. Our resolutions and promises are a way each one tries to bring about change; first in ourselves then in the world we inhabit. The world that surrounds us can be better if _______ .
When we take time out of our incredibly busy schedule, our priorities, which we are already aware of and which make our world better, come into greater focus. What we know as our ‘better self’ becomes fuzzy with the day-after-day chores and responsibilities of this life we lead. Priest-layperson, CEO-CFO-COO-teacher-doctor-lawyer-engineer-sales, man-woman are all caught up in the distractions. Those distractions have to be purposely set aside for our ‘better self’ to emerge. Without taking the time to purposely re-energize and be well reminded of our priorities, the distractions just keep us away from the truly important.
Members of the Parish Staff, ministry professionals, have written reflections about faith and family and priority. Nothing here ought to come as a surprise or shock, but as an affirmation of what one already knows is important. We are believers; our resolutions and promises, even the most private ones, mean something to those we love and the world that is ours to change. While not all by ourselves, we strive to bring “Peace on Earth."
