Pope Francis has called the “Synod on Synodality” for the entire Church, from October 2021-October 2023. The word “synod” is derived from Greek stems for “together” and “way,” in a sense, “journeying together.”
The main purpose of a synod is to listen to the Holy Spirit and discern the Church’s path forward regarding a particular topic. This particular synod is a chance to reflect together and learn from experience “which processes can help [the Church] to live communion, to achieve participation, to open Herself to mission.”
Part of this 2-year process is listening sessions in each parish within each diocese around the world. The discussions and ideas, hopes and fears from these sessions will be collected and synthesized from the local level up to the Synod of Bishops in 2023.
You have a chance to participate in a St. Alphonsus listening session on Sunday, February 13 at 12:00 pm in Weitzel Hall. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity! There are only 12 spots plus a couple of alternate spots to allow speaking time for everyone, so sign up soon. We ask that only one member of each household participate to allow as many households from our parish as possible to be represented.
A note of clarification: these listening sessions are not connected to Uniting in Heart initiatives, like the recent parish survey. Those initiatives serve to guide the local parish/pastorate and the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana. These synod listening sessions are intended to guide the Catholic Church world-wide.
