The chill in the air is a crisp reminder that autumn has arrived, and what better way to salute the season than with colorful pumpkins, hayrides and a German biergarten! Saturday, October 8 is the date for this year’s Pumpkin Fest and Oktoberfest, both hosted by the Knights of Columbus. So mark your calendar and plan on spending a fun-filled day at Saint Alphonsus Liguori.
Pumpkin Fest - fun for the family!
It’s “all in the family“ as free food and fun are served up in the athletic field and parking lot from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Enjoy a relaxing hayride before going for gold in the pumpkin decorating contest, and don’t leave before getting your face painted in the spirit of the season. Okay, so maybe some things should be left to the kids! Before heading out, be sure to adopt a pumpkin or two to take home.
Oktoberfest - German food, brews and music!
After the Pumpkin Fest, there will be a few hours to relax and recuperate, call the babysitter and come on back to the parish grounds for an adult evening of camaraderie and entertainment. Oktoberfest kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with live music by the Alpine Express Band, so dust off your party shoes and plan to polka till midnight. For some of us, dancing can be quite a workout, so if you begin to feel parched, consider quenching your thirst with some local brews, which will be available for purchase along with a selection of other food and beverages.
Admission to Oktoberfest is $5 with proceeds going to local charities (Zionsville Food Pantry; Boone County Boys and Girls Club; The Caring Center) or guests may purchase a $25 raffle ticket to benefit the Haiti relief fund and obtain free admission. Each raffle ticket buys entry into a drawing to win $5,000 as well as many other fabulous prizes. The raffle will take place during the evening, but ticket holders do not need to be present to win.
So again, mark your calendar for Saturday, October 8 and join us for a full day of festivities!
Interestingly, October 8 is also the feast day of Our Lady of Good Remedy. This title was bestowed upon our Blessed Mother by St. John of Matha, in gratitude for her miraculous assistance in raising money to buy freedom for Christian slaves. May her intercessions bring many blessings to the Knights of Columbus in their charity toward others.
