After much preparation and labor, parishioner Nick Badger and a team of volunteers have installed an outdoor crucifixion scene on the west wall of the church.
A special dedication for the statues will take place following the 10:30 a.m. Mass onSunday, September 23. Parishioners are welcome to gather near the exterior wall and hear a special greeting and prayer along with meeting some religious sisters who will have traveled to Zionsville for the occasion.
The statues were purchased with gifts from parishioners and brought from a warehouse in Ohio. The installation of the new statues were part of a Boy Scout Eagle project for Nick Badger. The statues along with a brick walkway, landscaping and benches were all added for the use and enjoyment of our parish families and guests. The four individual statues have all been kept covered so that they can be revealed in their new place at the dedication.
A little known history - Although new to St. Alphonsus Liguori, the statues have a history that the parish is learning about. After bringing the statues to the parish, a call from a Sister Christine Roady came. Sister Christine is with the Sisters of Charity in Cincinnati and was at one time a member of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity community in Bedford, Ohio. Her current community is a branch of the Vincentian Sisters, where she remembered seeing the crucifixion scene as a young postulant when she entered the Bedford convent in 1958. Although the parish does not know how long the statues had been there, we did learn that that community of sisters originally came to Cleveland, Ohio at the request of the Bishop in the 1930’s to minister to the Slovak immigrants.
Her and other sisters from their community will be present for the dedication on September 23.
A special thanks - The parish is very excited to have this new addition that will add to the grounds of the parish as well as aid in the spirituality of our faith community. St. Alphonsus Liguori if very blessed by God for the generous gifts from all who helped support and work on the project. A special and most sincere thank you to everyone who took part to make this project possible for all to enjoy.
