“Strengthening our church community, one swing at a time.”
In May of 2004, 18 golfers teed it up at Zionsville Golf Course for the first season of the St. Alphonsus Golf League. Two years later the league would double in size, and 3 years after that the league more than doubled in size again to a total of 87 golfers in 2010. Things have held steady with 80+ golfers each year since, but much has changed over the course of the past 9 seasons, including the addition of golf league software, dozens of statistical reports, a skins game, multiple weekly contests, a league website www.stalgolf.com, and league shirts and hats. In addition there is now an end of year scramble, dinner and awards program, along with an outreach event where league members serve dinner to over 200 members of the St. Alphonsus youth group. In 2009 the league established the Lanny Parsley Memorial Golf Outing to honor a deceased founding member with a day of togetherness on the golf course and a mission to raise money for local Zionsville groups and charities.
Even with all the growth and changes over the years, the one constant seems to be the fellowship. While golf is the primary tool, the league was started with the idea that getting to know your fellow parishioners, in more than just a passing manner, creates relationships, makes a parish stronger, and binds us individuals in a special way as we make the same faith journey. As one golfer put it, “I joined for the golf, but got way more because of the fellowship”. The St. Alphonsus golf family stays in constant contact throughout the year praying for one another, sharing conversations after church, golfing on the weekends, and joining up on various church committees.
As we embark on our 10th year we invite you to join us for our 2013 season to find out for yourself why Monday summer nights in the parish have been more than just ordinary this past decade!
