During this time of year, we are bombarded with advertisements of the latest sales and awesome deals. So, with list in hand, we head to the malls, battling traffic and crowds of holiday shoppers. Then finally, after hours of frustration, we head home again, worn out physically and emotionally, only to have to do it all over again if we didn't find everything the first time. Sound familiar? Have you ever thought of giving the gift of prayer?
Consider making a commitment, whether big or small, as an offering for someone else. We all have those hard-to-buy-for friends or relatives with everything they could possibly want; however, everyone needs prayer. Think of how touched others will feel with
a special gift of the Spirit. Read on for some priceless ways to give - no matter the time of year!
Mass Intentions
While we may bring our own private intentions to church, the gift of a Mass intention means that the priest will offer up the sacrifice of the Eucharist for a specific person (living or deceased), and that intention is announced during the celebration of the Mass. A small stipend is suggested for each Mass intention. Stop by the parish office to reserve Mass days and times.
A Holy Hour of Adoration
Eucharistic Adoration will take place in the Day Chapel each week in Advent from Friday, 9:30 a.m. until Saturday, 7:30 a.m. Spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in the monstrance for the intentions of another. Cards are available in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel to give to those for whom you pray.
Fasting or other small sacrifices
Making small day-to-day sacrifices like abstaining from sweets or walking instead of driving to the store may also be offered for the intentions of another. So, when you pass up dessert or put on the walking shoes, say a small prayer acknowledging that you are making those sacrifices for a specific intention.
Prayer and candles
Give a gift of praying a novena or a weekly rosary for another or offer time praying the liturgy of the hours. You may even consider lighting a candle for the prayers and intentions of a special person. Cards are available in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel to give to those for whom you light a candle.
Acts of charity
Another way to give can be through acts of charity for another. Consider shoveling a neighbor's driveway or cleaning off their car in the mornings. Say a prayer offering the time and work for that person - you can even pray throughout the time it takes to complete the task!
