October is Respect Life Month with numerous activities occurring throughout the nation. One popular activity that you may see people taking part in is the 40 Days for Life campaign that will kick off at the end of September and will conclude November 6. The campaign's mission is "to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America."
Since its beginning in 2007, there have been seven 40 Days for Life campaigns that have taken place with an outreach that includes 337 cities throughout all 50 states, seven Canadian provinces, Australia, England, Northern Ireland and even Denmark. Wow!
There are three components to the campaign:
1. Prayer and Fasting: Thousands of people will take part in praying during this period whether at home, church or at specified locations near abortion clinics. Fasting is a form of physical prayer where individuals offer up small sacrifices of things that may enjoy but do not necessarily need, such as chocolate, television, dining out, coffee, etc ...
2. Constant Vigil: The vigils are mostly at locations outside abortion clinics where groups of individuals gather to pray or silently hold signs. It is a powerful witness to patients and clinic workers to see communities coming together, not in protest, but in prayer. There are several locations where organized vigils are being held. Indianapolis groups will be gathering outside the Planned Parenthood at the corner of Georgetown and 86th streets.
3. Community Outreach: 40 Days for Life has continued to spread the pro-life message to thousands. Throughout their annual campaigns, communities of supporters will hold campaign kick-offs, educational sessions or more to build awareness about abortion and the great need to support all life.
